Referrals still matter. A lot.

In a world of AI-matched resumes, automated screenings, and crowded applicant pools, one thing hasn’t changed: people trust people.

A recent SIA article highlighted just how powerful referrals remain:

  • 90% of hiring managers say referrals make hiring more efficient
  • 80% prioritize interviewing referred candidates over equally qualified applicants
  • 76% believe referred candidates perform better on the job
  • And 91% say a strong internal reference can open doors that would otherwise stay closed

Yet only 40% of job seekers believe referrals actually help them stand out. That gap is costing people opportunities. Especially for recent grads entering the job market; Your degree gets you in the game, your network gets you in the room!

Way back when, my first job came through a referral from my rugby and Cal community. 30 years later, I’m still in touch with many of those same people—and now I get to help their kids find their first jobs. #OLD!

That’s the long game of relationships. A network isn’t something you “use” when you need a job. It’s something you build, nurture, and invest in over time, and yes, it takes some effort and cycles, don’t be afraid of the work. The returns are tenfold not to mention it’s fun, and should feel good, especially when you can pay it back and forward.

Don’t believe me, check it out…. hiring managers notice:

· 68% are less likely to provide a reference if you only reach out when you need something

· 66% consider whether you’ve maintained the relationship over time

The strongest referrals don’t come from convenience. They come from consistency.

Regardless of whether you are just entering the workforce or have been around the block a few times, start now! Stay in touch with classmates, teammates, coaches, family friends, professors, and internship managers. Offer help before asking for it and be someone worth advocating for because at the end of the day… … A referral isn’t just a name in an email. It’s trust.

And trust, built over time, is what actually moves careers forward.
